Domestic forklifts go global to accelerate lithium battery advantages, helping market expansion
Created Date: 08th Jan 2025
Overseas has become an important market for forklift sales in China. From a global market perspective, the sales capacity of overseas markets is nearly twice that of domestic markets, and both developed and emerging markets have opportunities for expansion.
On the one hand, the global scale is expected to continue to steadily increase in the future. On the other hand, the market share of domestic leaders in overseas markets is still relatively low. Compared with the market share of foreign brands such as Toyota automatic looms, there is significant room for improvement in the medium and long term.
In addition, the value of individual forklifts in overseas markets is relatively high, and exported products can obtain higher gross profit margins. With the increase in the proportion of overseas revenue of domestic manufacturers, the overall profitability is expected to improve.
Europe, America, and Asia are the main markets for forklifts, with the Asian market growing faster in recent years, and the penetration rate of electric forklifts in the European and American markets being relatively high.
From a product perspective, European customers value environmental friendliness and operational comfort, American customers value durability, Asian customers value cost-effectiveness, and although the number of Class 1 and Class 2 cars exported from China is relatively small, they are entering a period of rapid development.
From the channel perspective, foreign customers are more concerned about the economic lifespan of their products and prefer to purchase forklifts through leasing rather than direct purchase, requiring forklift manufacturers to provide comprehensive services.
From the perspective of competitive landscape, the main brands in the European and Asian markets are local enterprises, while the leaders in the American market are mainly Japanese and local American enterprises. Foreign companies such as Toyota and Kaiao have built a complete value chain loop through product sales and services.
By comparison, there is still significant room for domestic forklifts to increase their market share in high-end markets such as Europe and America.
China is the main producer and exporter of lithium batteries worldwide, accounting for over 70% of the world's lithium battery production capacity. Battery manufacturers and equipment suppliers have rapidly iterated their technologies and continuously improved their engineering capabilities through rich practice and large-scale construction processes, forming excellent competitiveness in cost control, equipment production, equipment accuracy, and other aspects.
Benefiting from the first mover advantage of the lithium battery industry chain, domestic forklift enterprises such as Anhui Heli and Hangcha Group have cooperated with domestic lithium battery industry advantage manufacturers to ensure the supply capacity of core components through self-developed and self-made methods, as well as direct procurement from lithium battery business companies with equity participation;
Ensure the supply capacity of core components such as batteries and electronic control assemblies by participating in upstream lithium battery suppliers and other means.
In recent years, the application of lithium battery forklifts in China has been rapidly popularized. The sales volume of lithium battery forklifts in China has increased from 74700 units in 2019 to 370400 units in 2023, with a CAGR of 49.21% from 2017 to 2023 and a lithium battery penetration rate of 31.56% in 2023.
